Homemade Yogurt

I have always thought that yogurt was tough to make.  I recently decided to give it a try and it turned out GREAT!  I wish I would have started making this yogurt a LONG time ago!  It is going to save me SO much money!
I got my recipe from Salad-In-A-Jar blog and I definitely recommend heading over there and checking it out!  She even has a video on how she made it!  It helped me out!  Check out the Recipe and Video HERE.
Salad in a Jar incubates her yogurt in the oven, but my oven does not go that low.  So I incubated my yogurt in a ice chest with towels.  I also put a towel on the top and then closed the ice chest.  I then set it on my dryer for about 8 hours.
It worked out GREAT!  When I pulled the yogurt out it was still warm and looked like yogurt!
To make Greek Yogurt you have to strain the Whey off.  I used a regular strainer lined with Cheese Cloth.  Keep all of the Whey because I have a great bread recipe that I will soon post that uses Whey!  When it is strained, you just whip it and add your flavorings.  I flavored ours with honey and sugar.  It was Great!

Jean Quilt Tutorial

My husband and children love quilts!  Especially homemade ones!  So for Christmas this past year I made my husband a "Levi Blanket" out of old jeans that we wore out over the years.

I started out cutting my jeans into strips.  I cut them into 4, 5 and 6 inch strips, it all depended on how small my jeans were that I was cutting.  To me, this is the most time consuming part.

I sewed the strips into rows.  Then go a head and place the rows into the order you want them to be sewn into.  I was planning on using a flannel sheet that I picked up on clearance a few years ago that we never used.  So I laid the sheet down and then laid the rows of jeans on top of that so I would have the right size of top.  Once you have your rows laid out in the order you want them to be in, start sewing them together to make your jean top.

Now on to the pictures...

Lay your sheet on your frame.  It's best to have help and it's more fun too!

Clamp your frame together and put on stands.

You know how much I love yard sales!  Well, I picked up a huge roll of batting at a yard sale for $1!  Actually my husband found it and bought it asking if I could make him a jean quilt with it...

Lay out your batting and smooth out any wrinkles.

Now put the jean blanket on top and pull tight. Clamp the corners and use pins along the sides to hold down the all the pieces of the quilt.

Now time for the fun part!  Tying the quilt.  We wanted to put our ties right down the center of each strip that I sewed.  We used 3x5 inch cards to space out the ties along the strips.

With a few people working, you can really crank a quilt out fast!  As you finish rows, roll the sides up and then reclamp the corners.  This way you can tie the middle of the quilt.

Once it is all tied, all that's left is finishing up the edges.  There are different ways to bind a quilt.  I did it the easiest and quickest way I knew how to do before my husband came home!  I trimmed the all the layers down, but left the flannel sheet about 2 inches longer than the rest.  Then I folded the flannel over the jean part and sewed.

Now we have one heavy, but warm, jean quilt!

Questions:  How do you do the edges?
I don't do anything to the edges.  I have made many jean blankets and haven't had any problems with the edges.  I just sew them together using a straight stitch.

Friday Feature: Shabby to Chic Queen Creek

We decided to do a feature on Shabby to Chic Queen Creek.  Shannon is the one behind this fun blog.  She takes old furniture and makes them new again.  I love her decorating style.
And she lives out in Queen Creek and that's where we are all from!  Small world!

Here she distressed this beautiful piece of furniture.

And I love the way this secretary desk turned out.

And she also uses chalk paint, something I have been wanting to try.

So if you have some time, head on over to Shabby to Chic Queen Creek and take a look at all of her treasures she has redone!

Throw Pillow Covers

My husband's Aunt just led me to a great discovery at Hobby Lobby. Maybe you all already know about this, but I had never seen these...Throw Pillow Covers!

They have the cutest colors and textures. Every time I stop by Hobby Lobby, I have to stop myself from walking down that isle. It's the isle by the fabric, where they sell the curtains.

Every once in a while, they go on sell for 50% off! That means I picked up these beauties for $3! Can you believe that?! I can't even sew them for that cheap?

Instead of buying new pillows, just recover them and they will look as good as new!

Enchiladas made with What?

We love enchiladas at my house.  They are easy to make because I just throw in whatever I have on hand, and it always tastes yummy!

Last night I made some enchiladas.

The secret ingredient...old tortilla chips!  Do you ever throw away those chips at the bottom of the bag that are to tiny to eat, or maybe they are a little stale?  Well, don't do it!  They make the best enchiladas!

Here is what I do, but I never make them the same, so take it for what it's worth.

I made my own enchilada sauce.  Nothing fancy, just tomato sauce with garlic salt and chili powder.
Spread out the sauce on the bottom of your dish.  Dump it the tortilla chips.
Add cooked hamburger, cheese, beans, canned green chilies, whatever you have.
Layer what you have and add more enchilada sauce, topping it off with some cheese.

Enjoy!
